Queen Angelfish www.ReadyAquatics.com

Holocanthus ciliaris: The majestic Queen Angel lives up to every bit of her namesake with a beauty like no other on the reef. A varied and nutritious diet is required to maintain magnificent health and color in this fish; please provide a wide array of dry and thawed fresh frozen foods of green and meaty natures (marine meats). Rarely, passive, you'll need strong and assertive tanktmates for most specimens; large clownfishes, hardy wrasses, many damsels...even small groupers and some triggerfishes do quite well with Queen angels. Prepare for a large adult size too; a 4ft long aquarium will suffice for the first few years, but at least 6ft will be required for an adult to be displayed with its soft pennant fins trailing in glory.

Emerald Crabs www.ReadyAquatics.com

Emerald crab; long heralded as one of the very few herbivores (actually an omnivore here) that will consume the dreaded bubble algae. Though not obligate on bubble algae, they really are effective in short time at controlling Valonia and the like. Also called Mythrax or Mithraculus crabs, they also eat unwanted pest algae, extra fish food and a plethora of items in the aquarium. They are generally very well behaved and considered reef safe; that said, take care if considering them for a tiny aquarium with tiny fishes. It is possible that without enough algae they would try to grab a small fish in hunger. Otherwise, they are magically helpful as a pest control and unassuming scavenger.

Slate- Pencil Urchin: unlike most urchins that graze algae, the Pencil Urchin has a meaty tooth! For aquarium systems with fishes or invertebrates that are fed meaty fare heavily (mysis shrimp, etc), this type of urchin is very well suited.

Reef keepers with small aquaria or small sessile specimens need to take heed, however, as this species is hardly the most graceful as it cruises about the tank. Excellent for a hearty community tank, the Pencil Urchin can be long lived and, clumsiness aside, is rather

Ophiothrix and kin: Blunt spined brittle starfish: the entire Ophiuroid family of serpent and brittle starfishes, with rare exceptions, are very long lived, unassuming and well suited for captivity.

They have amazingly adaptable natures to substrates, systems, and foods. As an opportunistic omnivore, they are fascinating, beautiful and useful scavengers. In smaller aquaria, they easily can serve as a featured animal in their own right!

Sometimes mistaken for an octopus by laymen for the serpentine arms, your starfish will give you many years of service and entertainment.

If you target feed a small amount of food each day at the very same time, many Ophiuroids learn the queue and come out in plain view each day anticipating their treat!

David Saxby's Stunning Reef Tank

David Saxby's tank has become a thing of legend, featured in magazines and on television it is understandable that it commands such attention, now, UltimateReef is very proud to be amongst those that have witnessed this spectacle in the flesh and confirm to you, avid reader, the hype is absolutely warranted. What has been achieved here is no mean feat, a true testament to education, experience and a passion that still after all these years takes the blatant form of a twinkle in David's eyes. As he sat down in his favourite chair, cold beer in hand, the pride in his face tells a story that even the owners of the most humblest of systems can relate to, answering all of our many many questions frankly and honestly, this is what we learnt...
